LEGAL
Terms of service
Effective 17 August 2026
The service
Umbra provides end-to-end encrypted storage and synchronization for Obsidian vaults. You must be legally able to enter this agreement and must provide accurate account information. One person or organization is responsible for each account.
Your data and keys
You retain ownership of your data and grant Umbra only the limited right to store, transmit, back up, and delete its encrypted form as needed to operate the service. Encryption and decryption happen on your device. You are responsible for safeguarding your passphrase and recovery key. Losing both can make the vault permanently unrecoverable.
Acceptable use
Do not use Umbra to violate law or others' rights, distribute malware, attack or probe systems without authorization, evade quotas, interfere with other users, or resell access without permission. The service may rate-limit, suspend, or terminate abusive accounts to protect users and infrastructure.
Plans and payment
Current limits and prices appear on the pricing page and at checkout. Paid plans renew until canceled. You may cancel through the billing portal; access continues through the paid period and then returns to the applicable free limits. Taxes, refunds, and payment disputes are handled as shown at checkout and as required by law.
Availability and changes
Umbra aims to operate reliably, but maintenance, security incidents, networks, third-party providers, and software defects can interrupt service. Features and limits may change. Material adverse changes will be announced in advance when practicable.
Termination
You may stop using Umbra and delete your account at any time. Umbra may suspend or terminate an account for material breach, unlawful use, nonpayment, or a threat to the service. Where practical, notice and an opportunity to export encrypted data will be provided first.
Disclaimers and liability
The service is provided “as is” and “as available” to the extent permitted by law. Umbra does not guarantee uninterrupted operation or recovery from loss of credentials. To the extent permitted by law, Umbra is not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or lost-profit damages. Nothing in these terms excludes rights or liability that applicable law does not allow to be excluded.
Changes and contact
Material changes to these terms will be announced before taking effect. Questions and legal requests can be submitted through the authenticated account dashboard.
